Why Ranbir Turned Producer with 'Jagga Jasoos'?

He has had a tough run at the box office, what with Bombay Velvet flopping miserably. Now, the conversation has moved to Ranbir Kapoor’s state of mind, his market value & his first production ‘Jagga Jasoos’, directed by Anurag Basu.

Some in the media report that ‘Jagga Jasoos’ has 50 days of reshoot left to complete, while others have said that the film has another 70 days of shoot remaining.

Ranbir Kapoor however, is unfazed by the chatter around his home production. Signing up with Anurag Basu, one of his favourite directors, was a choice he made. In an interview to Pinkvilla before the release of ‘BV’, RK had said, "Basu’s process (Anurag Basu, director of ‘Jagga Jasoos’) is chaotic. He is a mad guy. He loves chaos. He works without a script. He works with passion, love & believes in creating on set. So it’s a different process for that film.”

With a smile he had also said that Basu had not taken his phone call for nearly a month! The director was engaged with a TV series on Tagore in Bengal during this time period. And Basu is ‘chaotic’.

Truth is, ‘Jagga Jasoos’ has around 45 days of shoot remaining to complete; some of those days also cover the re-shoot portions. The film, in it’s actor’s words, is ‘difficult’ for it requires him to play a really young detective who also stammers.

Our source confirms that the film has already been picked up by Walt Disney Company Limited for a handsome amount- the last outing of this studio with Anurag Basu was the super successful ‘Barfi!’

Add to that, RK works with a single point strategy on his productions- profits are shared by the director and the producer (himself) on a 50 50 basis. In his own words,

"To be honest, becoming a producer was never a monetary decision. It had nothing to do with that.”

While bumps at the box office don’t mean well in the current profit driven scenario in films, it mustn't be forgotten that in making the choices he does, Ranbir Kapoor displays a true appetite for risk. And Anurag Basu has proved his abilities to tell unusual stories time and again. Therefore to make an assessment on the fate of this young detective on the basis of shoot days is misleading. Wait for the ‘Tamasha’ to begin and the ‘Jasoosi’ to start, perhaps skeptics too will be surprised.
